| In
the heart of the picturesque Vallee d'Abondance, the village
of La Chapelle d'Abondance is less than 3 miles from the
famous resort of Chatel, just 20 miles from Evian-les-Bains
on the shores of Lake Geneva, and only 40 miles from Geneva
and it's airport.
During
the Winter season the telecabine de la Panthiaz takes
skiers up into the massive Portes du Soleil ski domain,
with over 650 kilometres of pistes and more than 200 ski
lifts, this is one of the largest ski areas in the world!
There's a regular bus service to Chatel and onto
the ski lifts at Linga and Pre la Joux.
La
Chapelle also has it's own independent ski area; Cret
Beni which provides quiet, sheltered, snowsure north-facing
slopes, ideal for beginners. The 35 kilometres cross-country
circuit following the valley floor from Abondance to Chatel,
via La Chapelle, should not be overlooked.
La
Chapelle d'Abondance has a choice of good bars and restaurants
including the immensely popular hotel Les Cornettes and
also Le Fer Rouge which brews it's own beer (bitter too!).
The
Summer season offers a wide range of activities including
walking and cycling through beautiful mountain scenery
with awesome views of snow-capped peaks. There are
local sights such as the 12th century abbey at Abondance
with it's beautiful 14th century cloisters and visitors
must sample the locally made Abondance cheese. Further
afield the area offers Evian's masters golf course and
spa, cruises on Lake Geneva, the water park and steam
trains at Le Bouveret and the salt mines at Bex.
